Preparing to Bet

The pockets of the roulette wheel are numbered from 1 to 36. In number ranges from 1 to 10 and 19 to 28, odd numbers are red and even are black. In ranges from 11 to 18 and 29 to 36, odd numbers. Accurate roulette sector betting requires both a top program and a skilful operator. Typically, European and French roulette tables have better odds as there is only one single green pocket on the roulette wheel. American roulette has two green pockets – one with a single 0 and another one with a double 00. The green pockets maintain the house edge, which means that if the wheel stops on green, all players’ bets are lost.

You are probably aware that casinos typically offer three major roulette variants for you to play. By and large, French Roulette and European Roulette are remarkably similar. American Roulette, though, is entirely different. European and French Roulette contains 36 numbered pockets and a single zero spot. American Roulette offers up 36 numbered pockets and two zero pockets, namely zero and double zero. This makes a bit of a difference in terms of your odds of success.

As you will be aware, if the ball lands in a pocket favorable to your bet, you will win. However, if the ball falls in a zero pocket, you will lose (barring a Trio or Basket Bet, which we will come to). With just a single zero pocket, European roulette has a house edge of 2.70%. However, American Roulette (with zero and double zero pockets) has a more substantial 5.26% house edge. It is, therefore, favorable to play European/French Roulette over American Roulette.

Roulette Bets

Now that you know which roulette variant is for favourable, it is time to look at the betting board. This can be quite confusing for first-timers. The roulette betting board lists all of the numbers on the roulette wheel, as well as the possible bets you can make. For simplicity, the bets in a roulette game can be divided into inside and outside bets.

Inside bets

Inside bets are more likely to see you win larger cash prizes, but they are harder to pull off. Some of the main bets you can place include:

1. Straight Bets: A wager on a single number. Place the chip on that number.
2. Split Bets: A bet on two numbers. These must be adjacent on the betting board, and you can place the chip between them.
3. Six-Line/Line Bets: This is a bet on two rows of three adjacent numbers. Here you must place the bet on the intersection between the end of two rows.
4. Corner Bets: Wagering on four numbers is done by placing the chip at the intersection between all four of those numbers.
   Players should also note that in some roulette games they can place Trio Bets, which involve betting on a three-number combination which also includes a zero or the zeroes. Basket Bets involve betting on the 0, 1, 2 and 3. These bets are fringe bets and not taken up by many players.

Outside Bets

Outside bets are more favorable amongst roulette rookies. You don’t need to learn any of the other roulette rules to place these types of wagers. Outside bets are far more likely to come off, but as a result of that, they are generally worth far less. They include:

1. Reds/Blacks: A simple bet on the ball landing in either a red or black-colored pocket.
2. Odds/Evens: Another simple bet whereby the ball needs to land in an odd or even pocket.
3. High/Low: A bet on numbers 1-18, or 19-36.
4. Dozen Bets: These wagers involve betting on one of the three dozens listed on the table. They include 1-12, 13-24, and 25-36, but maybe also be known as the 1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 12, depending on the table you’re playing on.
5. Column Bets: These wagers involve betting on one of the three columns of numbers running down the betting board. Unlike inside bets, where chips need to be placed on the numbered squares or between them; outside bets have their own marked spots on the board. Your chip(s) must be placed in those spots to bet.

Additional Bets: Roulette racetrack bets

Some roulette games (primarily French Roulette) contain a racetrack, too. These cylindrical betting board runs alongside the main one and offers up alternative bets. These bets all involve on betting on “parts” of the roulette wheel.

1. Voisins du Zéro: A 9-chip bet on the zero and seven numbers on each side of it on the wheel.
2. Tiers du Cylindre: This is a 6-chip bet on the opposite side of the wheel, covering 12 numbers.
3. Orphelins: This 4-chip bet covers the remaining parts of the wheel (8 numbers).
4. Jeu Zéro: A special 4-chip bet on the zero and its 3 neighbouring numbers.

Players need a good grasp of how the number sits on a roulette wheel before they try their hand at French Roulette bets.

Winning on Roulette

How much you can win when playing roulette depends on two things – how much you have wagered, and the type of bet you have staked money on. By and large, most roulette rules are the same from game to game, and this includes the paytable. As mentioned outside bets are worth the least. Players can typically pocket winnings of 1:1 for any Red, Black, Odd, Even, High or Low bets that are successfully landed. Those winnings rise to 2:1 for successful Dozen or Column bets.

As for the inside bets, these are worth far more. Players can pocket wins worth 5:1 for Six-Line/Line bets, 8:1 for Corner bets, and 11:1 for Streets. Split bets are quite valuable at 17:1, but the top prize is only paid out for successful Straight bets, with winnings of 35:1 dished out to lucky players.

Most roulette rules dictate that players can land 11:1 winning for Basket bets come in at 11:1, and 6:1 for Trios. French Roulette payouts are typically not fixed, though. These can vary greatly. Orphelins stakes can pay anything from 17:1 up to 35:1, Voisins du Zéro bets offer up as much as 24:1, and Jeu Zéro bets pay anything up to 26:1. Tiers du Cylindre bets are the only fixed racetrack bets and offer winnings of 17:1.

Look and Feel
